Звукові дієслова – особлива тематична категорія, тому що вони настільки ж різноманітні, як і звуки, що оточують нас. Проте варто зауважити, що звуки в англійській мові сприймаються інакше, ніж у російській. І, незважаючи на те, що ми чуємо однакові звуки, дієслова, що передають їх, дуже відрізняються в різних мовах.
to beep: звук автомобільної сирени або електронного пристрою: гудіти, сигналити; бибикать подавати звуковий сигнал; пищати, пікати
The driver beeped when he saw a dog on the road.
When the microwave beeps, it means that food is heated up.
boo to: шум, видаваний обуреної натовпом; звук несхвалення, несхвальний свист
The crowd booed the player when he missed the goal.
If your jokes are not funny, the audience will boo you.
to buzz: гудіти (про натовпі), дзижчати, бурмотіти, говорити нерозбірливо, крізь зуби
The crowd buzzed so I couldn’t hear the speaker.
She buzzed something with disapproval.
to chirp: цвірінькати, щебетати
The girl chirped something to congratulate me.
When I bump them into, they start chirping some compliments but I don’t think it’s sincere.
to clang: звук металевих або скляних предметів, вдаряються одна об одну: лязгать, бринькати, дзвеніти
Don’t clang the dishes, you can break them!
The door clanged behind us and we were locked out.
to click: короткий, клацаючий звук; клацати (друкуючи на клавіатурі клацати мишкою, кульковою ручкою, вимикачем, про замок, фотоапарат, клацати пальцями)
The student was clicking his pen подразнюючий для очей та everybody.
It was quiet in the room, but we could hear somebody clicking a mouse.
to crunch: хрусткий або скрипучий звук: хрустіти під колесами, під ногами; гризти з хрускотом, розчавити щось з хрускотом
He stepped on the ice and it crunched.
The pebbles were crunching while we were driving along the beach.
to gurgle: булькаючий, дзюркотливий звук: дзюрчати (про річку, воді); полоскати горло, видавати гортанні звуки
He gurgled something, but we didn’t make it out as his mouth was full.
She has a terrible voice, as is she is gurgling.
to hiss: шиплячий, шарудить звук: шипіти, як змія, сердито шепотіти, шарудіти (про траві, листі, вітрі)
The last leaves were hissing in the trees as the wind was blowing.
I was frightened when something hissed. I thought it was a snake but it turned out the wind.
to howl: вити, завивати, стогнати (про вітер)
The wind was howling and I couldn’t sleep.
to hum: дзижчить, монотонний звук: гудіти, дзвеніти (про машину), наспівувати собі під ніс, мукати (про людину)
When my bad cooks she always humming an old song.
The old fridge was humming very loudly.
to puff: звук випущеного повітря, звук, видаваний при видиху, пихтіння
The lillo puffed and became flat as I pulled out the plug.
The fat man puffed hard as he was trying to lift the sack.
to rattle: тріщати, гуркотіти, гриміти (посудом, ключами), деренчати, сильно стукати
Her bag was full of small things rattling inside.
When the train passes by hour house the dishes rattle in the cupboard.
to screech: верещати або кричати пронизливим голосом, скрипіти, верещати, скреготати
I should oil the gate, it screeches when we open it.
The brakes screeched and the car came to a halt without hitting anyone.
to splash: звук плескоту води: плескатися, бризкатися, бовтатися; клепати (по воді, калюжах)
The kids were playing near the water.
Something splashed very loudly and I understood that it was my handbag.
to thud: ударятися, падати з глухим стуком: бухнуться, звалитися, зірватися, шубовснула (про важкому предметі)
The box with books thudded on the floor.
She was so astonished that she dropped her bag and it thudded onto the ground.
to tinkle: дзвінкий звук: дзвінок телефону, брязкіт дзвоника, звук осколків, що розлітаються
The vase tinkled as it reached the floor and burst in shivers.
Our teacher used to tinkle the hand bell when she wanted to attract our attention.
to whir: звук, що дзижчить, випромінюваний машинами, апаратурою
In the factory the machinery was whirling so loudly that the workers wore earplugs.
When we turned on the old projector it started to whirl.
to whoosh: промайнути зі свистом, з шумом, промчати повз, видавати свистячий звук
The rider whooshed past us on a bike.
She came up to the window and whooshed the curtains open abruptly.
