Походження: Згідно блогу Oxford Dictionaries, ідіома “in a nutshell” походить від історії, датованої 77 р. н. е.: давньоримський історик Пліній Старший стверджував, що поема Гомера “Іліада” була написана на пергаменті настільки тонкому, що сувій з поемою легко поміщався всередині шкаралупи волоського горіха. Тим самим, масштабне твір поставало в компактному, стислому вигляді, буквально – «в горіховій шкаралупі».
Шекспір уперше використав у “Гамлеті” ідіому “in a nutshell” у близькому сучасному значенні “compact”, “concise”:
